Green and Gold x 4

Green and Gold x 4
Last weekend we had a intense 3 day selection camp held down the South Coast, with thanks to Surfing South Africa and the South African Surfing Legends, we were looked after so well, fed like kings and queens and accomodated in the luxury DeRosches Hotel in Margate.

These selection camps are always tough with one 1 slot available on the team and 4 girls all going for it, it was a tough 3 days doing battle , but I'm over the moon to have been selected for the South African Junior Team for the 4th year in a row and even more excited to be heading to California in October for my final ISA World Junior Surfing Championships,

Awesome bunch of people I will be representing South Africa with!
With a full 8 months until we leave, I will be hard at training with my coach Gary Freeman, both in the surf and in the gym and working closely with Spider making sure I am on the best boards as usual!

This will be the most time I have ever had to prepare for Worlds, so I'm setting my goal now for a finish in the top 10 come World Juniors, it will be my final year as a junior so I want to go out with a solid result!

Next up is a International Friendly against the French Juniors in Durban in two weeks time, I am the defending champion and am not going to give it up with out a fight!

Wish me luck!

My final SA Junior Champs

Winning my round 3 heat in the onshore!
So this time one week ago I was preparing myself for my last ever finals day of SA Junior Champs, I have been competing at the SA Junior Champs since 2008, I was 11 and competing at St Mikes in the u/12 girls , now 7 years later I was about to finish off 7 years of good competition with some good friends I had made over the years.

Finals day came, It was going to be a long day with still 2 rounds to go before the final, I kept it together and surfed my way through to the final along with Anoush, Teal and Jade, the stage was set for an awesome final, we all had our hears set on the gold especially with it being our last year.

Carving away!
But it was one of those heats at Point, Flat, long lull, scratching for waves and tactics came into play and 20 minutes later the best I could do was a 3rd, not what I wanted but, that's surfing, well done to Teal for taking the win and Anoush finished second with jade in 4th.

walking up to the key hole for the final my brother Wade said to me

"you have made every single SA champs final since 2008, that's 7 straight finals, that's an amazing achievement in itself so what ever happens out there doesn't matter, you've already achieved something that most people will never."

Snapping
I just wish the Point could have turned on like it did in the u/17 boys final, so I could have given it a real go and gone out on a good note, to lose without getting the opportunity to show what you can do always leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but that's how our sport goes we have no control of what the ocean will do in those 20 minutes.

The BEST team, Team SKZN have been like family over the years, so much fun!
When I look back now it was an amazing 7 year run that had many highlights:

2008 - surfed my first SA Junior Champs
2009 - Won my first SA Junior Title at Nahoon Reef
2010 - Went back to back and won my second SA Junior Title at Long Beach, as well as the Surfer of the contest, one of only 3 girls (I think) to ever have won that award.
2011 - Had the highest heat total of the event winning a paid trip to Bali, I managed to score 19.65 out of a possible 20.00
2012 - First contest I ever surfed at point, I remember scoring a 9.5 on a long wave in the quarter final, that was the highest single wave of the contest.
2013 - Point turned on for us perfect clean 4 foot waves, amazing to surf with just 3 other girls out, scores a 8.75 and a 7.75 in my semi and started the final with a 7.75, but got no back up haha.
2014 - My last ever SA Junior Champs also the longest SA Champs, I had to surf 5 rounds to make the final, dropped scores in the good category the whole event in all conditions was a special way to finish it off.

Now I make the big jump into the u/20 category at the Senior SA Champs, I surfed in the Seniors last year and made the final, so I am looking forward to having a good go at the u/20 title in 2015!

With my recent result I have got a slot in the SA Junior Squad and will be competing for a place in the 2015 SA Junior Team for the 4th time hopefully.

In between all the surfing I have been writing my Matric exams and I have just received my prelim exam marks and I got 2 A's. 1 B and 3 C's, so I think I'm doing a good job at balancing it all!

My Brother and biggest fan been there with me at every SA Champs!

Special thanks to this girl who has kept me on my toes at every event, I surfed against Anoush in my first SA's and it was great to surf our last final together as well, we have had some great heats over the years!

7 to 17 with Lizzy

10 years ago this month, Lizzy decided to put a sticker on the board of a little surfer girl from the South Coast, that girl was me!

I don't remember much of my life with out Lizzy being involved.

I didn't really know much about what being sponsored meant at the time, but I knew I got bags of clothes 4 times a year as well as cool wetsuits in any colour I liked!

Looking back now I realize how important it is to have a brand support you and how much Lizzy has done for me and my junior surfing career so far, also I realize how lucky I am to have a sponsor and have been sponsored for so long and had such support from such a great team of people.

I hope they are as proud of me and what I have achieved as I am to have that sticker on the nose of my board.

Lizzy has been with me through all three of my SA Titles as well as my 3 world junior champs, and tons other contests over the years, all the wins and losses,  helping me with clothing, surfboards, finances awesome bikinis and a host of other accessories!

Looking forward to another awesome 10 years!!!!

2014 Update

So I have been very quiet on the blog this year, travelling and then trying to catch up school, it's been a big ask to try and balance everything, with matric trials starting today I finally have a bit of time to put a lil blog together.

My year this far as far as contests go has been pretty successful:

Worlds - 22nd u/18 girls (Not the result I wanted!)
Billabong Junior Series - Mossel Bay - 1st u/18 Girls & 2nd in the ASP Pro Junior Women
Durban Surf Extravaganza - 1st u/18 girls & 3rd u/20 girls.
Billabong Junior series - Cape Town - 4th ASP Pro Junior Ladies
Selected to represent ASP Africa at the 2014 ASP World Junior Champs to be held in Portugal at the end of October.

Unfortunately the ASP worlds clashes with my Matric finals and after looking at all the ways it would be able to work out, we decided that education comes first and I had to give up my place on the team to Gina Smith who was next in line. Lucky I'm only 17 and have another 3 years  in the pro junior, so I WILL BE BACK!

Right now I have about 3 weeks to go till the final stop of the Billabong Junior series and then straight into my last SA Junior Champs, so the next few weeks will consist of plenty time in the water, in between my exams as well as in the gym working on my fitness, strength and flexibility.

Will try keep my blog up dated in my build up to these 2 important events!!

Photo shoot I did with Fabian Coetzee, a month back, that made it into the "Up Start" Section of last months Zigzag.

In between all the madness I also had my Matric Dance :)

And i'm off to Worlds again :D

Sooo stoked to have been selected to represent South African for the 3rd year in a row at the 2014 ISA World Junior Champs in Ecuador, in just 6 weeks time.

We had a 3 day selection camp in Cape Town a week back with the entire SA Squad, it was quite tough as there was only one position available in the u/18 Girls side and there were 5 of us fighting for it, so I am very greatful to have been chosen even though I didnt have the best camp.

Now I have just 6 weeks till we leave for Ecuador, lots of training and surfing to be done as well as ballancing my school work being in Matric, so there are going to plenty 5am wake up calls to make sure I can fit atleast 1 surf in each day.

This weekend we have a friendly International against the French at New Pier, this will be a warm up event for world and I am going to give it my best shot and see what happens.

The next challenge is to raise R 36 000 in the next few weeks to fund the trip, any assistance is greatly appreciated  if you can assist e mail me on chanelle.botha@yahoo.com

La Bella Vita!

So with the contest season yet to get under way and a long wave filled summer holiday I managed to get all the footage I needed to finish my short surf film.

The clip is called La Bella Vita , which means The Beautiful Life, which for me is exaclty what being a surfer is.
Thanks to my brothers for putting tis amazing clip together, Wade for all the hours on the beach filming and  Zayne for the creative intro and editing the video so well!

I would love it you all could share the video for me so that I can get my name out there!

Next up is the SA Junior Team Selection camp in Cape Town where I have my heart set on being selected to represent South Africa for the third year in a row at the ISA World Juniors in Equador!
